01 Apr Promoting Understanding and Sharing Type One Diabetes A-Z
Ellie had the pleasure of visiting Willard Orchard Hills Elementary School to read Type One Diabetes A-Z. Our thanks to librarian Mrs. Trishna Rosebrough, who marked her 30th diaversary; Mrs. Tiffany Houghtaling, who promoted love of reading from the earliest age by giving Ellie a special book to mark each birthday; and the delightful, inquisitive second graders who listened attentively, asked thoughtful questions, and started writing their own primers.
It was gratifying for Ellie to share information and bust myths and misconceptions about diabetes. It was exhilarating to connect with young readers in person. (Many of these students are the same age, 8, Ellie was when she was diagnosed.) It was joyful to inspire other kids with diabetes, to learn from them, and to experience understanding and empathy. As Ellie states in her book, “With the same strength that diabetes takes, I can do things that I love like writing this book. What if when you grow up, you help people with diabetes or even cure it! Just imagine! It’s zany but 100% possible (just like life with diabetes).”
Type One Diabetes A-Z was meant to be shared. If you’re interested in Ellie visiting your school or organization, please email us [email protected].
“A writer only begins a book. A reader finishes it.”
